Highland Valley Centre for Sustainable Waste Management

Project:

bullet

Regional landfill proposed on a waste rock and overburden dump at the Highland Valley copper/molybdenum mine with a capacity of 50 million tonnes of municipal solid waste from throughout southwestern British Columbia .

Location:

bullet

Highland Valley, 19km West of Logan Lake along Highway 97C, and ~80km southwest of Kamloops in southern British Columbia, Canada.

Scope of Work:

Assessment of Geochemical Interactions between Mine Waste Rock and Landfill Leachate.

  1. Assess the geochemical interactions between the mine waste rock and landfill leachate and the potential implications for landfill operations.

  2. Assess the potential for accelerated acid rock         drainage and/or metal leaching resulting from interactions between landfill leachate and mine waste rock.

Tools:

Site investigations, sample collection, laboratory tests including acid-base accounting ( ABA ), elemental analyses, leach extraction tests, solid waste extraction procedure (SWEP), toxicity characterization leachate procedure (TCLP) and sequential column tests.
