Nanisivik Mine

Mineclosure.com team members provided closure design services for final closure of the Nanisivik lead-zinc Mine at 73°N in northern Canada including the following significant tasks:

bullet

Final design, preparation of closure plan and permitting (2001 to 2003).

bullet

Field engineering and construction supervision (2004 to present).

bullet

Preparation of as-built reports and performance monitoring (2007 to present).

Faro Mine

Part of an overall mine closure team representing engineering and environmental considerations for closure. We participated in numerous planning sessions, scoping studies of options and alternatives, cost-estimating of options and risk assessments regarding dams, tailings, diversion channels and waste dumps. Provided detailed assessment of rock drain hydraulic design and stability undertaken. Also undertook the design, permitting and implementation of the controlled breach and decommissioning of a water retention dam at the Faro site. This dam breaching project was only the second such project undertaken in Canada to-date.

Mt. Whaleback Mine

Development of a cover system for acid generating overburden using the moisture store-and-release design concept. Field performance confirmed through large-scale cover system field trials. Detailed cover system performance monitoring has been in place since 1997.

Whistle Mine

Approximately 7 m tonnes of acid-generating waste rock was relocated to the open pit at CVRD Inco's Whistle Mine near Sudbury, ON, Canada. A multi-layer earthen cover system was constructed over the backfilled pit, primarily to limit the ingress of atmospheric oxygen to the underlying waste rock. Instrumentation was installed during construction of the cover system to facilitate evaluation of its performance over time under site-specific climate conditions.
